Inspired by a forty-something literacy student who wanted a script that was funny but true about an attractive, illiterate woman, An 'L' of a Difference is a story about adult literacy designed for mainstream performance or a group activity. (It was initially performed as one hour radio feature.)
Commercially savvy, small business woman Caro is forced to learn to read when her husband leaves her. Caro uses humour and technology to cope with the traditional dilemmas and challenges facing an adult struggling to read. Set against the backdrop of a multi-level marketing cosmetics company, Caro is asked to read in public when recognised at an awards presentation. Typically she has managed to avoid this. Initially apprehensive about enrolling in a literacy class, Caro calls on her neighbour Max, and develops unorthodox, visual ways of coping with homework. Dowdy tutor Alice accepts Caro’s challenge for a makeover, but exploits Caro's problem-solving techniques for her own academic advantage.
This script can be used to highlight the challenges of adult literacy and also act as a discussion starter.
